Hurricanes. Fires. Tornados. Monsoons. Typhoons.  Just. This. Week.

Millions of people have been undergoing terrifying realities and are still suffering from the aftermath. So really, do our words and thoughts have anything to do with what happens in our lives?

I don’t have the answers to that. I can’t believe that being positive is what makes you get through a natural disaster – or if being fearful will wreak more havoc.

But this is what I believe.

I think nature is bound by rules, not by “justice”. Things happen based on a specific set of rules, of which, unfortunately, we are not always aware.

I believe ancient civilizations were more aware of some of these rules: respecting our natural environment, conserving our resources, understanding that we were interacting with a greater force and that our actions needed to correlate to that.

I believe our function on this earth is to co-create with the divine power, or universal power, or natural power – whatever you want to call it.

I think we got a little full of ourselves – because we were doing really well. We stopped listening to what the needs of our surroundings were and the only criteria was – Is it possible to do it? Will I make money from it? Not – is it good? Is it useful? Will it make a better world? Will I and others enjoy it? Will it improve my experience now and in the long term – or is there an inherent danger I need to test?

I actually don’t blame us. It’s a heady power to create. It’s exciting.

Look at this new food I made! What about this awesome technology! We didn’t stop to consider how the waves we harnessed could affect the human body. How releasing black gunk into the air affected the world around us. How building affected our wildlife and in turn, our ecosystem. Nature always seemed so permanent. So immutable. How could my little action affect something so big? But it does. How exactly, we don’t always know. But it does.  The flutter of a butterfly and all that.

I don’t think we are to “blame” for these natural events. They have always happened. And there is probably a benefit to the planet in these events occurring (some scientists may even know the benefits – I just don’t). But to ignore the fact that something is occurring at a pace we are not accustomed to is to put our heads in the sand.

We have been behaving in a certain way to natural forces, and the natural forces are responding by natural law. There is a result to actions, even if we don’t see the actual connection, even if its not like getting your hand burned on fire when you put it there, even if the reaction takes years or thousands of years.

And what does this mean about our attitude? Our words, thoughts, feelings and actions?

I believe that another natural law is that we are co-creators of our environment and this has three prongs to it.

Prong 1 – When we feel positive about something, when we believe in our good from the bottom of our souls, we choose words that reflect this and actions that reflect this. These empower each other and make for a reaction that will continue this path. So, let’s say, when we believe in our own power, we will act in a different way that will give us more power in the end. Does this mean we are in complete control of the outcome? If something bad happens, we didn’t “believe hard enough”? No. Absolutely not. We are only learning these laws and we don’t know all the ways we interact with nature (or Gd). Nature is a force that we don’t control. So, positive people don’t always get the result they seek and negative ones are sometimes surprised for the good. Which brings us to prong 2.

Prong 2 – That no matter what occurs in the outside world, we control our reaction to it. Two people can experience the exact same event and each will feel differently about it. Which means that they experience it differently – and for those two people – the event will not impact their lives in the same way. While we say we control our reactions, truthfully, some have an easier time of it than others. There is no need to belittle yourself if you find a situation difficult. Each person on this planet has a different biochemistry, a different background a different set of experiences that they face. So, if you are one of those people who struggle with positivity in the face of life’s struggles. Give yourself a hug – that’s the best way you can start shifting this perception. Then, check and see if there are small ways that you can start looking at the experience you are facing in a different light. Small babysteps and love yourself as best you can!

And then there’s the metaphysical prong 3.

Prong 3 – Part of the natural law is that our thoughts actually bring the likeness to itself. In my life, I have found this to be true. Have you experienced this? And what are your thoughts about it?

I believe that everything is interconnected, whether we can see the connections or not. The cavalier way we and previous generations have interacted with our natural surroundings up till now may not have been intentionally cruel, but is bringing the results we see today. And perhaps the cavalier way we treat ourselves, not paying attention to our every day blessings – and so many other ways we don’t celebrate ourselves to the best we can, is a part of this neglect. But even if you don’t believe this – we can still be the best stewards of this earth  – and the best stewards of our bodies and ourselves – that we can. Respect always goes a long way.
